Talking About Kindness and Friendship Through Children’s Stories

Sometimes the smallest moment says the most

It might be a character waiting for a friend, an unexpected invitation or somebody noticing that another person has been left out. In children’s stories, the quiet moments can be just as memorable as the big adventures.

Books about kindness and friendship give families a chance to notice those moments together, without needing to turn reading time into a lesson.

Let children notice things for themselves

When you are reading a picture book, you might be surprised by what catches a child’s eye. Perhaps they notice a worried face in the background or wonder why somebody is standing alone.

You can follow their lead with a simple question. “What do you think is happening there?” is often enough. They may have a completely different idea from yours, and that is part of the fun of sharing a story.

Kindness does not have to be a grand gesture

Offering help, listening to someone or making space for a new friend can mean a great deal. Stories give children the chance to see how those choices feel from another character’s point of view.

Sometimes it is best not to ask anything at all. Just enjoy the pictures and the journey, and let the conversation happen when it happens.

Sometimes friendship is about the people beside us, and sometimes it’s about those we wish were still a little closer. Missing a friend is simply another way of remembering how much they mean to us.
